How To Protect Your Shadow Footprint - Part 1

Huh? What are you talking about? What's a Shadow Footprint?

Good Question!   With our Social Web, it is important to protect your Digital Shadow because what others say about you online can either boost your image and reputation, or completely destroy it. This holds true regardless of what people say, whether they are talking about you, your brand or your business in a professional or personal manner.

Your Shadow Footprint is defined by what others have to say about you online. This includes pictures, video's, audio recordings and text posts on blogs, social media and internet websites. On the Social Web, your image and reputation is the the sum of Google's Search results.

Most of us have heard the message “Protect Your Digital Footprint”. Your Digital Footprint is defined as anything you put out on the internet and social media sites about yourself. Your Shadow Footprint is content and information that others post and publish about you or your business online.

While you may take the action to be a good Digital Leader, others may not, and what others say and post about you or your company can really hurt your reputation.

Why is it important to protect our Digital & Shadow Footprints?

In our digital world, most people go to the internet as their primary research tool to look things up on Google, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other search engines. Thinking about our Digital and Shadow Footprints, anything you, or others, put up about you on the internet is searchable and can have more meaning than anything you might include in a proposal, company overview, a resume or application paper.

Here's the thing, even if what is being said about you is not true, when people see things in print they tend to believe it, especially if the content is published on a credible site like an online article on a newspaper's website, or a podcast on a radio station's website.

The reality is our Digital & Shadow Footprints:
  • Remain on the Internet Forever
  • Are defined as the amount of content that is traceable back to a given individual, brand or company, whether the content is words, photographs, audio, or video … regardless of the publishing source
  • Define our social identity, online brand and persona. As an internet user, we create our social identity in online communities, blogs and websites. It is defined through our actions, behaviors and interactions with others. Through our social identity people determine our online personality / persona which defines our online brand. Our online brand and persona is who we are as a person and how others perceive us online.
  • Over time, our digital and shadow footprints combined, create our Social Identity
  • Can be our new first impression.  By this I mean, people may meet you for the first time online through social media sites or reading about you on a blog or in the news. Think of it this way, you have probably met people online first through reading a news article, through your friends, or by joining an online community, before actually meeting them in-person offline. What they see about you online will create a first impression, and that impression will either be good or otherwise. I am sure many of you have accepted friend requests from people you never met, and did so because they had a positive online image. I am also sure many of you have declined friend requests or blocked people because of their online behavior and negative online image.
  • Examples of Digital Footprint: photographs you uploaded to social sites, blog posts, shared video files, posts you wrote as status updates or comments you made on a friend's wall.
  • Examples of Digital Shadow: photographs, video's and audio clips your friends or family members post about you as their update status, news articles published on the newspaper or radio station's website

As internet users, we are responsible for our own actions, and we need to be Digital Leaders. We can make a conscious decision to protect our Digital Footprint, as well as the Shadow Footprint of others by being a Digital Leader and a good Cybercitizen. We control what we post and we should not let technology betray us or others.

One of my all time favorite authors and speakers in Digital Marketing is Erik Qualman [@equalman]. When we interact through social media and email, he calls me #OhCanada and I just love it! Erik is the author of Socialnomics and Digital Leader, and he is a strong proponent for Digital Leadership. Two must read books for ANY user of the social web is Socialnomics and Digital Leader by Erik. I strongly encourage you to read both of his books as they are truly insightful.

While we can control our Digital Footprint we have no control over our Shadow Footprint. However, we can … and MUST ... take measures to protect it.

Next week, I will share part two of this two-part blog series. In part two, I will share strategies and tactics on how to actually protect your Shadow Footprint. In the meantime, if you have any questions on part one, please post questions on this blog, or you can post them to my Facebook Page http://www.facebook.com/sweetmarketing

In closing this post, take a moment to watch “A Tale of Two Footprints” by Mr. Sheehy  This video reinforces the content in this post.

USA Today - Social Media Makes It Easy to Share and Overshare Alike

Last night I was having trouble sleeping, so I pulled out my smartphone and did some Internet Research, then decided to search on my name to see what information would come up in a Google Search.

To my surprise, and excitement, I found an article authored by Kevin Shelly of Courier-Post, published in USA Today, with my name mentioned throughout the article. Here is the story behind how this happened.

In April 2013, I was giving presentations on "Protecting Our Children Online" and "Internet Safety & Digital Leadership" to local groups and organizations in Prince Edward Island, Canada as a Keynote Speaker at Annual General Meetings. During that time, I was tweeting, facebooking and blogging about the hazards of oversharing.  In a series of tweets, I shared that key management and decision makers avoid people who are negative online, bashing other people, companies, brands, politicians, etc., because they view these people as unstable and if they get disgruntled they'll take it to the social web versus other means ... so in other words, there's a total lack of trust and credibility in people who negatively overshare, challenge others, and complain on social media.

This led to Kevin Shelly tweeting me (@kcshlly), asking if I would do an email interview because he was writing an article on oversharing.  I said yes, I would be happy to help and saw it as a good opportunity to share our message of Digital Leadership and Protecting Your Online Footprint.  I had absolutely no idea Kevin was writing the article for USA Today.  I answered the questions, added a few of the key findings of the research work I have been doing with East Prince Women's Information Centre, sent it off, and that was it.

Last night, I Googled my name, and found the USA Today Article and thought 'That's Pretty Cool'.  I then noticed the article is published on a few other news websites.  I honestly had no idea Kevin was writing the article for USA Today, however, I am happy that the message we have been sharing locally here in Prince Edward Island Canada, is now all over the social web .... Thank You Lord!

Below is the full article. To view it on USA Today:
Social Media Makes It Easy To Share and Overshare Alike

Social media makes it easy to share and overshare alike
The good news with social media: It's easy to share.

Want proof? Google the word overshare. Check #overshare on Twitter.

There's horror story after horror story. Maybe not Anthony Weiner of Weinergate fame bad, but bad.

Here are a few examples straight from Twitter's #overshare feed:
--"I lack any sense of forethought, higher-level reasoning skills or dignity. So I'm a big hit at parties. Add me!"
-- It's really not necessary to tell me you had a stomachache then follow it up with, "I was in the bathroom for a while."

Then there was this exchange:
"I feel bad for all my non-followers; you are missing out on reading my hilarious, embarrassing, and emotionally intense tweets."

Followed immediately by:
"had to unfollow due to your non-funny, embarrassing, and emotionally intense tweets."
Sometimes it isn't what is said, it's the sheer volume. In fact, FourSquare has created an overshare badge for users who "check in" — obsessively telling the world where they are — 10 or more times in a 12-hour period.

Frankly, unless you are one of George Clooney's ex-girlfriends, I don't care where you've just checked in, let alone that you have done so repeatedly. Hmm, I seem to have overshared here — and that's the point.

We all know someone who overshares. Sometimes it is us.

For instance, I have a relative who posted nearly 1,000 words, filled with intimate details of another relative's illness, in three Facebook status updates.

The three posts attracted more than 100 comments.

I was aghast, but held my tongue, trying to keep in mind that sooner or later, we all overshare.
Me included.

Stuck at home for two days while sick — never mind exactly how — I recently posted multiple times on Facebook out of utter boredom. I probably didn't go over the edge in terms of content, but the volume was certainly near the tipping point.

Someone I know posted numerous glazed-eye pictures, generally with a glass in hand. The person wrote things such as "marinate me in sauvignon blanc" as a status update. Let's just say this didn't help their case later — in court.

Nancy Beth Guptill -- who does marketing for Sweetspot Marketing in Prince Edward Island, Canada, advises social service agencies, and posts on the dangers of oversharing -- says businesses routinely monitor social network postings and checkout online profiles.

"Anybody can paint a really good picture of themselves in a resume and company portfolio — however — how they behave online gives insight into who they really are," she said.

"People who overshare, badmouth others, including companies, brands and complaining about customer service, are deemed untrustworthy. Also, from a cyber bullying point of view, people who overshare, that information often gets used against them by others wanting to hurt and harm them, plus predators seek out emotionally insecure people," said Guptill.

Guptill has some general pointers about things to keep in mind:
-- Postings are permanent.
-- "Secure" sites aren't secure.
-- Internet postings can carry more weight than a resume.
-- Your postings become your brand, including interactions with others.
-- People and organizations will "creep" your postings to learn about applicants, looking for insights regarding values and character.

Worrisome content includes:
-- Provocative photos and information.
-- Drugs and alcohol.
-- Badmouthing and rudeness.
-- Poor communications skills.
-- Gossip, complaining, discriminatory comments.
-- Sharing too much confidential information about self and others.

Guptill's final tip: Think before you post.

I have a tip of my own: Unfollow or unfriend folks who routinely overdo it. Don't announce to the world or the "friend" that you have done so. Simply move on.
Doing otherwise is, well, oversharing.

Turn Prospects into Customers Overnight!

Today I’d like to talk about how to turn prospects into customers and retain them for future marketing to. While, your marketing is doing its job, you need to be working on turning those prospects into customers. There are a few key ways to draw them in and seal the deal. You need to be:
  • Inviting
  • Informative
  • Enjoyable

The biggest fear of most new customers is the dread buyer’s remorse. You want to avoid this at all costs and this should be mitigated if you’ve provided a quality product/service that delivers on the marketing claims you’ve made.  However, this can still occur. There are two ways to deal with this:
  • Offer to refund money-no questions asked
  • Offer a bonus they can keep even if they return the product

These offers alone will also mitigate buyer’s remorse because the customer will trust you more, just for offering these things.  There are number of other ways to turn a prospect into a customer:
  1. Offer a special price as an opportunity for you to test the market.
  2. Offer a lower price with the reason of pushing inventory to pay a tax bill, for your kid’s' braces, or another tangible reason. Customers love that this makes you feel so much more human.
  3. Offer a referral incentive.
  4. Offer a smaller, more inexpensive product first to build trust.
  5. Offer package deals.
  6. Offer to charge less for their first purchase if they become a repeat customer.
  7. Offer extra incentives-longer warranties, free bonuses if ordered by a set date.
  8. Offer financing options, if applicable.
  9. Offer a bonus if they pay in full.
  10. Offer special packaging or delivery.
  11. Offer “name your own price” incentives.
  12. Offer comparative data or other comparison tools.
  13. Offer a trade-up or upgrade to something they already have.
  14. Offer additional, educational information to help them make the decision.
The options really are as limitless as you make it. You can use these or other ideas to find what works the best for your business, products/service and target market. Remember this…

By making it inviting, easy, informative, non-threatening, educational, inspiring and fun to do business with you, you’ll loft your company above the competition.” Jay Abraham

Making It Pop! 5 Major Components to Good Advertising Copy

There are 5 major components to good advertising copy: (The order of these is essential to success)
         Command Attention
         Showcase Benefits of Products/Services
         Prove the Benefits
 Persuade People to Embrace the Benefits
         Call to Action

Advertising is sales in print. So, you need to think about the unique benefits your products/services offer and showcase that in a persuasive way. You need to emphasize
results, not features.

Let’s take a minute to talk about each of these components:

  1. Command Attention: This is usually accomplished with the headline. You need an attention-getter that makes people want to know more about your products/services. The best headlines give a vivid portrayal of the benefits or show how a problem can be avoided with your products/services. The headline is the advertisement for the advertisement.
  2. Showcase Benefits: You have to showcase the benefits of your products and services and, more importantly, show how they will solve or prevent a problem.  They need to know what’s in it for them. Include useful, factual and clear information to show precisely what the benefits are and how they are going to help the customer.
  3. Offer Proof: This is where you prove what the advertisement is offering. You need to establish you have a method to deliver. Consider information that establishes credibility and past performance.
  4. Persuade: You need to add compelling reasons for your potential customers to purchase your products/services. Use a hard sell approach and create scarcity. This will enact your potential customers to feel like they have to act now. Which leads into the last component.
  5. Call to Action: You need to compel your potential customers to DO something. They need to check out your site, sign up for your newsletter, purchase your products, contact you about services…something. Offer a freebie-a booklet, sample, product, bonus, demo, consult, limited time price…the list goes on.  There are lots of ways to get potential customers excited about ordering and help them feel like they are getting an amazing deal.

Good advertisements include all of these components and are not complete without any of them. You can sit down and think through any one of these components, then figure out how to best place them together for the most effectiveness.

We can help you with this too. Try our FREE test drive to learn how to put together great advertisements from some of the best in the business.

Share of Voice and Conversation are the most powerful forms of Advertising

In this New Marketing Era, the most powerful form of advertising and promotions is Share of Voice and Conversation.  In fact, Markets are Conversations and these markets exist online across the different Social Media Networks.

Current 2010 statistics published by Nielsen Company and eMarkter indicate that nearly 75% of all Internet Users are regular users of social networks.  Further, 93% of internet users active in Social Media expect companies to have a social media presence, and they expect to actively engage with companies online.

Needless to say, Social Media has exploded into our world and from a marketing perspective, it is unprecedented. Never before have there been so many ways to connect to customers, clients and communities.  Every second of the day, more and more people are engaging in conversations online.

Regardless of the  industry or business sector, companies and individuals that are not paying attention to this glaring trend are missing out. Making connections, building your brand, getting referrals, creating value, advertising for significantly less – are all attainable through using online social media and incorporating this phenomenon into your marketing plan.

Even more important, taking it close to home, Facebook statistics for Prince Edward Island and Canada, based on July 1st 2010 population counts: Approximately 42% of PEI's population and 45% of Canada's population are using Facebook.

Without any doubt, it has become an integral part of our culture, communication and communities. And with statistics like these, how can you NOT have a presence?

While these statistics may be great, the question YOU have is: "How do I use this for my business?" This is where Nancy Beth and Maureen step in.
