From Time To Time We All Struggle

I remember the day I threw my hands in the air and announced to my family that I quit! That I give up and I was closing the doors to Sweet Spot Marketing.  I had been working double time and barely making ends-meat.  Here I was, a single parent trying to support my daughter on a solo income as there was no child support being received at the time, and it seemed the harder I worked in all aspects of my life, the further push-back I received.

I was tired, fed up and emotionally drained.  While I had a few clients here and there to pay the basic bills, it wasn't quite enough to cover everything, and definitely not enough to financially sustain a long-term future.  After going through this lull for a few months,  I was ready to throw in the towel and start the search for a 9-5 job.

I thought my family would be relieved because they had watched me struggle. We are a very tight-nit family and we are always there to support one another through thick-and-thin. So when I announced at the supper table that I had made the decision to close the doors to Sweet Spot Marketing to start looking for full-time work, to my amazement my parents said to not give up and to persevere because success was just around the corner.

NANCY & GREGG GUPTILL
You see, my parents are my life coaches and mentors, and I would often share with them the different opportunities I was working on, with discretion of course.  They must have sensed that some of the opportunities were near closing because they highlighted specific ones.  Oh I remember getting upset with them to suggest I keep going when I just couldn't wait any longer.  I remember breaking down and crying saying I couldn't do it anymore that I felt like a complete failure, that the end of month bills were coming and I was out of money.  I had reached my breaking point.  However, in that moment, both of my parents looked me straight in the eye and asked me to reconsider.  In their typical loving yet firm manner, they asked for me to sit down and listen to them, so I did just that.

My parents took turns going over the great work that had been accomplished in growing my business. They presented all of the things that were going right, and highlighted a few lucrative business opportunities that from their perspective were ready to blossom. They asked me to give myself a few days to self-reflect and to clear my head.  They also asked me to give myself just a little more time before closing the doors and suggested holding off on making a final decision in two-to-three months time.

Somewhere in the midst of all the mixed emotions I was feeling, something clicked. I realized if my parents have this much faith and belief in me, I must be able to muster up a mustard seed of hope for myself and to put my faith and trust in God to let Him lead, while I let go of the reigns in trying to steer my own destiny. I had a paradigm shift in my thinking, and I made a commitment to my parents that I would hold on just a little bit longer.

Thankfully I had made the right decision at the insistence, encouragement and support of my parents. Within less than a month, two of the opportunities did blossom, changing the direction of my business forever.

I learned a very valuable lesson through that experience.  When the world feels like it is closing in around you and you feel like everything in your life is about to come tumbling down, it is important to  stop and put things in proper perspective and to realize this is just a moment in time.  Before making any firm decisions, reach out to someone you trust who you know has your best interest at heart.  When we isolate ourselves and carry the burden alone, we are stuck with only the thoughts that are going through our own minds, of which may not be a full and accurate picture of the reality of the situation.  In my case, I am fortunate to have family members I can confide in. For others, it may mean reaching out to someone within your circle of friends, even within your professional network.

If you have nobody to confide in, I would like to extend my hand to you.  There  is always more room at my table to help others.  I invite you to Private Message me through my Sweet Spot Academy Facebook Page. Head on over to the page and send a private in-box message or feel free to post publicly on the wall  if you prefer.  I will respond to your message within 72 hours of receiving it.

Meanwhile, for those of you facing a difficult time, I hope this post gives you a bit of encouragement to hang in there.  Being an entrepreneur and running a small business is not for the faint at heart. We are going to face ups and downs in our business. It's at those times we have to stop and remember why we launched in the first place.

To all of you who are reading this blog post, I invite you to head on over to my Facebook Page and share how you will help support, encourage and inspire others today. What are some of the things that you do to lift-up, build-up and cheer-up others in their time of need.

OVER TIME YOU & YOUR BUSINESS WILL CHANGE

2016 - A YEAR OF TRANSFORMATION

A NOTE TO BLOG READERS:  This is a continuation of a message that starts off in our bi-weekly newsletter hence the reference within the body of this blog post.

Hi Friends,

I am going to take a moment to share from the heart of what it is like to be a successful business owner when you are faced with life-changing experiences that cause you to fall out of love with your business to the point of loosing your passion for what you have done for so many years.

I realize this is the first newsletter I have sent out in quite some time, in fact for some of you, it may be the first one you have received in well over a year, perhaps longer.  This is why I want to share with you my experiences in recent years - I promise - it won't be too long or 'heavy' - and it won't be too personal.  Some people thought I closed my doors and understandably so.  The truth is, life threw me some unexpected curve balls that took me completely off in a separate direction.

You see, the last few years I have experienced a lot of change that actually had me questioning whether or not I was on the right track with my professional and personal life.  Quite frankly, these years have been transformational to say the least.  I was working on a two-year cyberviolence research project for Prince Edward Island that occupied much of my time, plus I was doing quite a bit of work in the Agriculture sector.  I was also dealing with a serious personal health issue where my quality of life was significantly diminished.  Fortunately, I have fully recovered and this has made me realize just how precious life is and is the key motivator for me to launch a new community called Wome On The Move.

During this time period, I have to be completely honest, I fell out of love with Sweet Spot Marketing Canada and felt I could no longer continue operating that business, so I completely stopped that portion of the business in Fall 2015. What I did love and felt excited and enthused about was providing skills training and empowerment programs. This side of my business has actually opened up new exciting opportunities that has allowed me to expand my business operations beyond the borders of Prince Edward Island and Atlantic Canada. I have always enjoyed lifting and elevating the lives of others, helping them to reach their dreams and destiny whether for personal, business, or a combination of both.

Meanwhile, 2016 has been a year of complete transformation for me, of which I will share bits and pieces over time. The long and short of it is, I worked part-time finishing off the Cyberviolence Research project which is a very meaningful piece of work but also very emotionally draining due to the nature of the subject. I went from thinking I was going to have to retire from working at the age of 45 to reaching pretty much a full recovery of which myself and my specialist cannot explain other than to say I believe there was divine intervention, I was crazy enough to accept the offer to run in a political nomination which I honestly have to say was on of the BEST experiences of my life.  The results of everything I have been through over the past few years, especially this year, I have never felt more focused, excited and filled with passion. There are an abundance of opportunities waiting for me since doing a soft relaunch of my business this year.

The purpose of this blog post was to share with you from the heart, that as an Entrepreneur and Small Business Owner,  I know what it is like to reach the highs and lows in your business.  2013 and 2014 were my best years in sales.  I was expanding the business and hiring contract trainers within the Maritimes and I was excited about where the company was going, although this was right around the time I started having medical complications and we really didn't know what was taking place until November 2014 when everything came to a halt and a crash.  It took from November 2014 to April 2016 to work through to a full recovery.  During this time I worked part time and as you can imagine it completely changed the direction of my life and my business.

I am a full believer that things happen for a reason and I do believe I was meant to travel down the path of success to end up having my life completely re-directed, because now I have a new appreciation and understanding for my life purpose and my business.

I can only tell you that during this year (2016), after my full recovery in February/March/April, I have entered into a space of complete clarity and focus. I spent a lot of time refocusing and repositioning Sweet Spot Academy, with the help of Fresh Media. In fact, the company has been renamed to Sweet Spot Academy as our focus is primarily business and digital skills training, with a  strong focus on small group training and empowerment programs, and I have launched a new community called Women On The Move.

If you have made it this far in reading this blog post - thank you for staying with me, I appreciate you taking the time to read the full post.  If you have similar experiences, I would be very interested in hearing from you to share your story.  If you feel you are stuck and in a rut and need some help getting out of it, I would appreciate the opportunity to work with you.

In closing, I wish to thank all of you for visiting my business blog, taking an interest and sincerely wishing you much peace and abundance in your personal, professional and business life.

LEAD GENERATION: Your 'Dream' Top 100 Prospect Strategy

I've said it once, and I'll say it again  ... You can not be all things to all people! So stop trying and start focusing your energy on only the top best.

When it comes to Lead Generation, it's important to remember the 80/20 rule. 20% of buyers will bring you 80% of your revenue. Focusing on the 20% will always bring you a greater impact, and it's also much more cost effective. If you're spending $1,000/month on advertising, you're using a "shotgun" approach to a broad market, 99.9% of whom will never buy what you have to offer. What if you could take that same $1,000/month and target the top 100 prospects in your area or niche?
You have to have your business go through the following progression in the minds of your market's best potential buyers:
I've never heard of that business. → I think I've heard of that business → Oh yeah, I've heard of that business. → I want to know more about that business. → I like that business! → That's the business that I work with. → You have got to check out this business!
This is what Malcolm Gladwell talks about in The Tipping Point—bringing your business to the place where it's the talk of the community and your popularity is unstoppable.
Your top 100 prospects might be only 25 people or it might be 250, but it's always cheaper to go after the best and most influential buyers rather than all the buyers.
Your target group will now hear from you once a month—at a minimum. Most of the people on the list will probably throw your letter away the first 4 or 5 times they get it, but remember that you're committed to building a reputation, not simply getting clients. Building a reputation is a strategic objective, not a tactical one. And if you want to build one on purpose, this means that you must be targeting the people who will help you accomplish this faster. Who are they? The Best Buyers.
You're going to get something out to these people every month, even if it's only a letter or flyer. It won't cost you a lot of money, just the price of a stamp and an envelope (and maybe an attention grabber), but it will be very effective.

The first thing you're going to do is send them a letter introducing yourself and offer them something free.

Then you're going to continue to contact them every month and you use that opportunity not just to sell, but to show that you're the industry authority.

That means you use education-based marketing —telling them what's happening in your industry, what to look for, what to avoid … and why you're the most logical choice when they decide to buy.
Consider that one of the top 100 just might become your customer for life… and how that would change everything for you. Keep up the mailing campaign and you may land several new customers over the year. The key is always repetition.

Change Your Habits & Grow Your Business

As business owners and managers, there are natural patterns that develop within our business and personal habits. Over time, we actually get locked into specific behavioral patterns that produce specific results. Many patterns are favorable and we reap positive rewards, while others not so favorable and are fruitless.

Unfortunately, these fruitless behaviors are not the results we are looking for …since those results tend to be a lack of revenue and profits for the business.

The main problem is the unproductive behavioral patterns we use daily, they become ingrained into our subconscious mind as habit patterns. These habits must be changed, and they must be changed on a subconscious level so we can replace the old unproductive habits with new productive ones. But is this really possible?

Here's how the sequence works, like it or not. Your thoughts produce specific beliefs. Those beliefs produce specific actions, and those actions produce specific results. If you aren't getting the results you want, then you MUST change your thoughts and beliefs so that you begin to take different actions… and taking those actions over a period of time create habits.

What you need to know

Perhaps the following story will put everything into perspective…

Think about a newborn elephant at the zoo or the circus. The first thing the keepers do is drive a huge steel stake deep into the ground and attach a heavy rope to it. The other end of the rope is tied around the back foot of the baby elephant. The baby struggles and strains pulling against the rope trying to break free.

After many attempts, it learns through repetition that the effort is futile, and it finally gives up. It now "believes" it can never break free, and the end result is that it stops trying. From that point forward, the steel stake and massive rope are no longer needed.

If you look at the adult elephants nearby, you will notice they are also tethered to a stake, but in an entirely different way. Instead of a steel stake, there is a small wooden stake. Instead of a massive rope tied around the rear leg, there is a flimsy piece of string. That alone keeps this massive animal in its place.

These elephants have been mentally conditioned to "believe" they cannot break free of their constraints, so they don't even try. They "believe" they will never break free of the rope, and that belief leads to a specific "action" which is to stop wasting energy pulling on the rope, and that leads to a specific "result" which is to keep the elephant in place using minimal restraint.

Why you need to know this

Is the mentality of the small business owner any different?

Small business owners have been mentally conditioned to behave a certain way. They have specific beliefs… such as "in order to make more money, I have to work harder. "Money is the root of all evil." "No pain, no gain." "Money doesn't grow on trees." "If I don't do it myself, it will never get done."

These beliefs lead to specific actions which is to work more hours and put forth more effort in a vain attempt to increase revenue and profits. That leads to specific results which are feelings of overwhelm, anxiety and frustration … that more and more effort is required, even though results don't seem to appear… and in most cases, diminish.

Many Business owners don't have a clue how to remove the mental barriers that are sabotaging their success. They need to get laser-focused on their highest income-producing activities, and learn how to hire, assign, delegate or barter their non income-producing and less productive tasks.

  • What if you could do the same thing?
  • What if you could discover a proven and tested process that could double your revenue?
  • What if you could remove the mental barriers that may be sabotaging your success?
  • What if you could get laser-focused on your highest income-producing activities?
  • How can you learn to develop these critical skills that can revolutionize your business?

Should businesses ignore Facebook for B2B marketing?

We came across this article on Social Marketing Forum and give full credit to  .

The first social network that comes to mind when thinking about B2B marketing is obviously LinkedIn. However, what about Facebook? Is it suitable for business-to-business? Of course it all depends on your market, goals and target groups.
Business buyers are people and they also use Facebook. Although Facebook is generally less used in the buying process than blogs or LinkedIn, it certainly shouldn’t be ignored.
While many strictly distinguish between Facebook as the ‘consumer environment’ and LinkedIn as the B2B place-to-be, in many countries and demographics Facebook is so popular that professionals use it both for personal and business reasons. They simply know how to distinguish between friends, family and professional contacts.
Furthermore, there is a new generation of B2B buyers: the social ones. They are more used to social platforms and can be compared with the ‘connected consumer’.

Differences between Facebook and LinkedIn

In total, 93% of all business buyers believe that social media presence is important and necessary, 85% believe interaction and engagement is important.
Facebook of course has way more users and people spend much more time on Facebook then on LinkedIn. However 41% of all companies that used Facebook for B2B marketing did acquire new customers via this network as LinkedIn reaches a more professional audience by definition and is built for business networking.
Also remember that the B2B buying process is a group process so, even if the final decision maker is not on Facebook, those that influence him might be. Tip: only request to connect on Facebook if the buyer already knows you from a blog, Twitter, LinkedIn or in real-life.

Some goals you can use Facebook for as a B2B marketer according to a survey of B2BOnline.com:

  • Focus on thought leadership (done by 60% of respondents).
  • Generate leads (49%).
  • Solicit feedback (46%).
  • Use Facebook advertising but only when the goal is clear (35% of respondents do it).

More goals you can serve using Facebook for B2B marketing:

  • Branding: being more personal and transparent by interacting in a more human way.
  • Customer support.
  • Creating communities (Groups).
  • Relationships: showing who you are and what you do in an engaging and more ‘fun’ way.
Should you advertise on Facebook as a B2B marketer?  It really depends on your goals and target group. In integrated marketing activities, it surely helps. One reason might be reaching more people although that often goes hand in hand with other tactics such as sponsoring.
Why did the $100m companies sponsor the Olympics 2012? Because the reach was phenomenal. So is the reach of Facebook.
So listen, watch and learn.. but don’t forget to be prepared for criticism too.
